Preparedness Days: A Practical Guide to Wildfire Preparedness

Preparedness Days: A Practical Guide to Wildfire Preparedness

2026Resources
PUBLICATION

This guide offers a practical proposal for organising community preparedness events in response to wildfire risk, with particular emphasis on dialogue among residents, public authorities, and emergency services.

The guide has been developed by the CareNet research group at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya within the framework of the European project FIREPRIME (European Programme for Wildfire-Prepared Communities), co-funded by the European Union.

The guide presents Preparedness Days as a flexible tool to create spaces for collective engagement to analyse risk at the local level, identify vulnerabilities, and promote preparedness and self-protection actions. The document highlights the value of dialogue and collective work in sharing knowledge, improving coordination among actors, and strengthening trust and community networks, all key elements in wildfire risk management. It includes practical guidance on how to design, facilitate and follow up these events, as well as examples of dynamics and questions to support collective reflection.

The guide is intended for public authorities, organisations and communities interested in promoting more participatory and effective approaches to wildfire preparedness.
