My research focuses on care infrastructures in ‘ageing societies’ within the context of a care crisis, technological transformation, and climate change. At the intersection of the social studies of science and technology (STS) and ageing studies, I investigate the notions of care and ageing that underpin these infrastructures, and their effect on the lives of care providers and recipients. I have analysed the implications of digitalisation and the use of smart systems for care, as well as for forms of support and social participation. I have also examined the development of alternative residential options for older people (for example, collaborative housing or senior cohousing), as spaces for experimenting with different ways of living, building community and providing care in old age. More recently, I have begun to explore the relationship between ageing and disasters in two respects: on the one hand, the impact of disasters on older people, as well as their role and capacity for agency; on the other, disasters and their anticipation, preparedness and mitigation as a means of managing ageing at both the individual and collective levels. Furthermore, I examine human–animal relationships in old age from a multispecies perspective, an essential aspect for understanding the increasingly important role that companion species play in ageing societies.
I have extensive experience in national and international projects on these topics. I worked on two projects focusing on the ethical and social implications of e-health and telecare technologies for older people – EFORTT (FP7) and VALUE-AGEING (FP7) – the latter as a Marie Curie postdoctoral researcher in the Law, Science, Technology and Society Group (LSTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). As a principal investigator, I have led projects on innovation and responsible research and innovation (RRI) in smart sensor technologies (CANDID, H2020); the first study of the collaborative housing movement for older people in Spain (MOVICOMA) —thanks to a Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators from the BBVA Foundation—; new forms of digital social connectivity in old age from a comparative and ecological perspective (BCONNECT@Home); the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the residential care system in Catalonia (RESICOVID-19); and, more recently, ways of creating a home and how these change with the ageing process in settings designed to enable people to age as they would at home, with care and within a community (ENCASA).
I have been a visiting researcher at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), the Department of Sociology at Andrés Bello University (Chile) and the Centre for Invention and Social Process at Goldsmiths (University of London). I was also a member of the board of the Catalan Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, part of the founding group of the Socio-Gerontechnology network, and a member of the organising committee for the EASST/4S Joint Conference (Barcelona, 2016).
